CLIP TRIANGLES

Suppose you have a chain of 24 paper clips.  Follow the rules below to make triangles:

  • Use the whole chain.
  • Do not break up the chain
  • Make isosceles triangles (two congruent sides & two congruent angles)
  • or Make right triangles (remember Pythagoras?)
  • but NO EQUILATERAL triangles (all three sides & angles congruent) are allowed !

How many triangles can you make (& what are their sides?)

Which of these triangles has the greatest area?

NOOOOOO

You should be able to model it with (whole) numbers.

Good luck..........I have lots of faith in you!

And FINALLY the answer......

5 triangles:  4 Isosceles triangles (11-11-2, 10-10-4, 9-9-6, and 7-7-10) and 1 Right triangle (10-8-6).  The 9-9-6 isosceles triangle has the greatest area.
