The Racing Terror

A race car driver doubles his average speed every mile in a 3-mile race.  During the first mile, his average speed is 60 miles per hour.

What is his average speed for the 3 miles?

125?  Nope, still too fast.

Think about it......Speed = distance/time.

What is the total distance travelled & how long did it take?

Good Luck

Give up?

It's just a little slower than 103 mph.(exactly 102 6/7 mph)

How?  Speed = Distance/Time.

Distance is 1+1+1 = 3 miles

Time is 1 minute for the 1st mile + 1/2 min for the 2nd + 1/4 for the 3rd = 1 3/4 or 7/4 min = 7/240 of an hour.

3 divided by 7/240 = 720/7 or 102 6/7 mph

Good luck on the new problem!
